Wolk Children's Center

Nursery School & Child Care Programs

The JCC environment
Our Nursery School and Child Care Programs are housed in the state-of-the-art Wolk Children's Center in the JCC complex at 1200 Edgewood Avenue. The environment has been carefully planned with the young child in mind, including child-sized bathrooms, water fountains, sinks, furniture and a kitchen are in a totally secure facility. Each room is stocked with toys and games appropriate for that particular age group. A separate art and science room plus an early childhood library enhance the total environment. In addition, there are three beautiful outdoor playground areas that are used all year long.

Our children also have the opportunity to use the gym, play gym, pool, dance studio and auditorium in the main JCC building. Our swim program helps children feel comfortable in the water, and learn swimming skills at their own pace. Children use special equipment (i.e. parachute, scooter boards) to help develop gross-motor skills during the gym classes. They often enjoy intergenerational special programs at the JCC, take field trips and are visited by special guests.

Jewish culture is consistently conveyed through weekly Shabbat activities and other Jewish holiday programs that emphasize hands-on holiday experiences. Brachot are said before eating and Jewish ethics and Hebrew language are imparted through stories, songs, and games. Families of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome in our culturally rich center.

Our programs include a hands-on science component and many manipulatives for both math and science. Our extensive literature collection is always growing. Children come to know the wonder of learning about themselves and the world around them through fantasy play, creative self-expression, and self-motivation. Literature, music, art and social studies for all groups foster their exploration.

Our student/teacher ratio is small. All rooms have two teachers; most rooms also include an assistant teacher. Many of our teachers hold advanced degrees in education and all have been chosen for their superior abilities to work with young children. The part-day Nursery School and full-day Child Care programs are under the direction of Sandy Sapiro, who holds a Master's Degree in early childhood administration and has been a part of the JCC Early Childhood Department since its inception. Additional staff include an assistant director, program coordinator, administrative secretary, and specialists in science, music, physical education and swimming.

Our Goals
We believe we have a responsibility to your children to provide a safe and nurturing enviroment where children can begin their journey of growth and learning.
1. Each child will be made to feel special, unique and loved for who he/she is.
We listen to children, respect them and give them individual as well as group time and attention.

2. Children will gain in self-esteem and confidence, to be able to take risks, try new things and feel comfortable with the outcome.
We want children to take pride in their abilities and accomplishments and to see tasks through to completion. We offer choices, a varied and rich environment and a balance of new challenges and familiar surroundings.

3. Children will feel a sense of power and control over themselves and their environment.
We establish structure and encourage self-reliance through positive reinforcement and constantly increasing opportunities for independence.
4. Children will feel positive and experience the joy of learning by giving them some of the first tools to unlock information and explore ideas.
We provide a rich background of materials and experiences in which to experiment, observe, and interact. We work to excite and stimulate the imaginations of the children and help them develop appreciation for the world of learning from art, literature, mathematics, science, etc. to the physical.

5. Children will grow from a sense of self-respect to a sense of respect for others, seeing the children and adults as resources and friends.
We structure different sized group activities from one to one, to small group, to the classroom group - allowing children to feel comfortable being a member of each. Good communication skills (listening, verbalizing, and sharing) are important in relationships and are consistently positively reinforced.

6. We will foster Jewish awareness and pride by the celebration and study of Jewish holidays and customs as well as awareness of those ethical concepts which are central to Judaism.
