See You at the J Logo

It has been far too long since we’ve seen you at the J! We’ve given a lot of thoughtful consideration on how to open safely. We’ve made decisions based on many factors and have developed a series of reopening steps. September 8th is the launch of Step One and we couldn’t be more excited to have you back!
First and foremost, our reopening plans prioritize the health and well-being of our community. We have reviewed guidelines from the CDC and are using the Interim Guidance for Gyms & Fitness Centers during the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency issued by Governor Cuomo.
Please note that this information will be updated constantly – please check back regularly for new information.
Safety and Hours

  • The Champion Fitness Center – the upper-level cardio and the lower-level strength training area.
  • NEW! We have created a Fitness Annex on the same floor as the cardio room.
The Fitness Annex has both cardio and strength training machines to use.  This area will have dedicated senior-only hours.
  • NEW! An indoor HIIT room is located on the lower level for a manual cardio workout.
No other areas will be open during Step One, but we are evaluating areas for Step Two reopening next. The areas that remain closed include pools, spas, showers, gym/walking track, fitness classes etc.

We will be conducting a health assessment before you may enter the building.
It will be a quick series of questions. You will also need to have your temperature taken with a touchless scanner.
The questions will be centered around the following and may change over time.
  1. Have you been ill with confirmed or suspected COVID-19?
  2. Have you experienced any of the following symptoms in the past 24 hours: fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, muscle pain, repeated shaking with chills, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell?
  3. Have you been in regular close contact (defined as within 6ft) of a person with confirmed
    or suspected COVID-19?
  4. Do you have a temperature of 100 or greater?

  • Staff and all members over the age of two are required to wear a mask
that covers their mouth and nose at all times, including during your workout
  • NYS has ruled that gaiters, bandanas and buffs are not acceptable face coverings.
  • If you can’t wear a mask because of a medical condition, you must wear a face shield.
  • We have implemented social or physical distancing practices in all open areas by limiting capacity to 33%.
  • Traffic patterns have been reconfigured and we have rearranged equipment to help ensure social distancing.
  • Guest Passes will not be permitted at this time.
  • Children aged 9 – 12 years old must be with a parent and/or guardian adjacent at all times.
  • Children that are 13+ are free to use the fitness center without a parent or guardian.
  • Stay 6ft away from others whenever possible.
  • Staff will be placed throughout the Champion Fitness Center to monitor and enforce
all social distancing protocols and policies.
  • Please limit your use of a cardio machine to 45 minutes and limit your total visit time to 90 minutes
to ensure that other members can work out during this time with limited capacity.
  • Outdoor group fitness classes will run through October 3.
  • Online programming will continue.
  • All non-bottle water filling drinking fountains will be out of use. Please bring your own water bottle.
  • All HVAC systems will be upgraded to have air filtration systems at the highest rating available compatible
with our system, but no less than a MERV-11.
  • Members will be asked to use provided cleaning supplies to clean equipment before and after their workout.

Our reopening can and will be successful as long as we keep each other’s safety in mind. We are asking all members to help keep others healthy by following the rules below:
  • Areas have been redesigned for social distancing. Markers on the floor and signs throughout the building
are in place to make maintaining social distancing easy. Please take a moment to read and then follow.
  • We have increased the number of hand sanitizer and cleaning stations to allow for easy hand hygiene
    and equipment cleaning.
  • Clean your hands when you come in, during your workout and as you are leaving.
  • Stay home if you are sick or if a family member is sick.
  • Avoid lingering/socializing to allow other members to work out.
  • Try to reduce touchpoints.
  • Wipe down each piece of equipment you use before and after use and dispose of the used
    cleaning supplies properly.
  • Maintain appropriate social and physical distance from other members and employees
when walking throughout the gyms to the best extent possible.

5 Safety Bubbles

  • The facility will be entirely cleaned and disinfected prior to opening and after closing each day.
This includes a daily deep cleaning.
  • Enhanced cleaning protocol will focus on high-traffic, high-touch common areas.
  • All equipment will be cleaned throughout the day.

We will follow CDC guidelines for handling any suspected exposure within the JCC. This includes coordinating with the health authorities to report the potential exposure, notifying members and staff that may have had contact and deep cleaning the facility. It will also include quarantining employees that have had prolonged contact with the infected individual.

We will continue to modify our processes and make changes as needed to ensure the safety of our community – thanks for your patience as we navigate each new opening step.
