In 1991, Israeli diplomat Asher Naim went to Ethiopia, a country then collapsing from famine and a civil war, to arrange the rescue of 15,000 Ethiopian Jews. As the negotiations dragged on, Naim worried that his mission was mainly a publicity stunt for Israel and the Ethiopian Jews feared they were just pawns in the game. Exodus 91 takes viewers behind the scenes in this powerful political thriller. By blending dramatic scenes with archival footage and interviews—some real, some staged—director Micah Smith makes us consider the interplay of truth and fiction in film, in diplomacy, and in building national and religious identity.
