Kidnapped (Rapito): The Abduction of Edgardo Mortara
Thursday, July 18, 5:45pm; Dryden Theatre
Narrative | 2023 | 134 min. | Italian, Hebrew (w/subtitles) | Italy, France, Germany
Director: Marco Bellocchio
Set in 1858 Bologna, sumptuously filmed by one of Italy’s greatest filmmakers, 85-year-old Marco Bellocchio, Kidnapped combines painful history and operatic emotions to tell the true story of the Mortaras’ struggle to get their seven-year-old son back from an antisemitic, authoritarian Pope. The boy had been secretly baptized by his nurse; papal law said he therefore must be taken from his family to be raised a Catholic. Soon, the Mortaras’ plight becomes a weapon in Italy’s fight against papal power.
