In this gripping, coming-of-age story set amid social turmoil and antisemitism in 1960s Communist Warsaw, students Hania and Janek meet and fall in love. While the young lovers are not interested in politics, they find themselves unable to avoid it when they learn that Jews, including Hania’s parents, are losing their jobs in a discriminatory purge and being forced to emigrate. Hania does not want to leave Janek, and the couple soon participates in protests, which climax in March 1968, when they discover that freedom comes at a high price.
