He has never allowed himself to experience intimacy, suffers from tuberculosis, and relies on his overbearing family. That all changes when the worldly Dora Diamant meets Franz in 1923 on the Baltic Sea coast, where he is convalescing and she is working in a Jewish home for the impoverished. Dora accepts Franz for who he is, and Franz allows Dora to draw him out of his ennui. While they are only together for the last year of his life, their shared time together will have changed both Franz and Dora for the better.
