Wellness Wednesday – Understanding Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)
Wellness Wednesday: Understanding Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)
Wednesday, April 29 | 12:15–1:00 PM
In person at the JCC (Auditorium A) or on Zoom (recorded session)
Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rhythm that occurs when the upper chambers of the heart beat out of sync with the lower chambers. AFib is very common and becomes more prevalent as we age. In the United States, more than 6 million adults live with atrial fibrillation, and experts estimate that number could rise to over 12 million by 2030. AFib is also associated with a five-fold increased risk of stroke, making early detection and proper management critical.
During this session, Dr. Corteville will explain:
-
What atrial fibrillation is and why it matters
-
How AFib can affect heart health and stroke risk
-
Up-to-date treatments and recent research advances
-
Practical information to help community members better understand symptoms, screening, and care options
This talk is designed for a general audience and will focus on easy-to-understand explanations and practical takeaways. Learning about atrial fibrillation can empower community members—especially adults over 60—to recognize symptoms early, understand their risk factors, and take steps to protect heart and brain health.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Corteville enjoys spending time with family, music, travel, and developing new healthcare and business ideas. We hope you will join us for this informative conversation about heart rhythm health and the latest advances in AFib care.
